Although the symptoms of thyroid disease are generally similar in both males and females, there are some differences in how this hormonal disorder specifically affects the male reproductive system, sexual function, and other hormone-regulated systems.1

Reproductive function

Male infertility is involved in one third of couples’ inability to achieve pregnancy, while another third is related to female causes, and the remaining cases involves issues with both partners or have no identifiable cause.2

Thyroid hormones, which were previously thought not to affect male fertility, are now being recognised as having an important role in healthy sperm production. Poor thyroid function has an adverse effect on sperm count, the shape and structure of sperm, and how it moves — all of which can give rise to infertility.3

Sexual health

Thyroid imbalances can disrupt your sexual health and satisfaction. Males who have an overactive or under active thyroid may experience unique symptoms such as low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, and breast enlargement due to alterations in sex hormone production. The good news: these symptoms are reversible when thyroid hormone levels return to normal with the right treatment.3

Treatment for thyroid disorders take time, so be patient with your progress. If you find that you are still experiencing sexual difficulties despite treatment, talk to your healthcare provider about other possible factors that may be contributing to these problems.1
