Thyroid Neck Check
You will need a mirror and a glass of water to do a thyroid self-examination.
Step 1: Getting ready
Stand in front of the mirror in a well-lit room. Remove any items (scarf, jewellery, collar or necktie) that are covering your neck.
Step 2: Find your thyroid
Raise your chin slightly. Focus on the lower front part of your neck, just above the collarbones and below the Adam’s apple (for men). Your thyroid gland is located in this area.
Step 3: Look
Take a sip of water and watch your neck as you swallow. Look for any swelling, bumps or protrusions. Repeat this process a few times to get a good look.
Step 4: Feel
Use your fingers to feel around your thyroid and neck. Take another sip of water and swallow while checking for lumps or nodules that move while swallowing.
Step 5: Talk to your doctor
A healthy thyroid is not typically visible from the outside and cannot be felt when you press your fingers to your neck. If you noticed anything unusual, see your doctor for a more thorough examination.
